Happy Birthday Barbie
On March 9th, the Barbie Doll will be 50 years old. I use to have one of those first Barbies... I remember drooling over her at Woolworths and had to save up for along time to finally have the $2.99 to buy her. How I wish I had that doll now. I do have reproduction of her, but not the original, sadly. I now collect dolls with Barbies being the biggest part of my collection.

Theme Day: Passages and Pathways
First through a tunnel of trees...
Over a long bridge...
A short trip on a ferry....
To join with family and friends to honor 80 years worth of memories.
Happy Birthday, Dad!

Snow Roads
After a week of snow, Tim was getting cabin fever, so we bundled up, put the truck in four wheel drive and toured our neighborhood. We had just learned that there is a weather station nearby, we found it on google maps and tried to find the road and building. We think we identified it. Then we drove by a new house that is being built by some wealthy lawyer... 7,000 square foot house on four lots. The roof looks like a mountain range.

Winter in Diamond Point
Last Christmas we were living in a small cottage in town, so it wasn't too surprising to see snow there. But this year, we've moved back to our large house in Diamond Point. Because we are just two blocks from the beach (and 14 miles from town), we rarely get snow here.

Sunshine Herb and Lavender Farm
We finally got around to visit the Sunshine Farm which is the lavender farm that is closest to our house. I've been to most of the other farms in the area, but since we only have one car and I can't drive, I have to depend on Tim to take me places.
This one has a great store with lots of choose from and fun yard art, although their fields aren't as large as some of the other farms yet.

Dungeness School House
I've attended several events at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, including a writing class. It's great that the history of this building has been saved.
Cindi
History:
The Dungeness area, in the early days, was a thriving community. Early settlers saw the need for a school. At a May 10, 1892, meeting, votes were cast in favor of bonding the Dungeness District for $3000 to buy land, clear and fence it, and build and furnish a two-story school.
The Dungeness School opened on February 27, 1893, with 73 pupils ranging in age from 5 to 20 years. The teacher received $75 a month for a four month term, ending June 30. Living quarters were provided on the second floor. Classes were large and books and supplies not easy to get. School Board minutes of April 8, 1895, show a motion was passed to buy the school a bottle of ink.
As years passed, a rivalry grew between Dungeness and the rapidly growing town of Sequim. Pupils were leaving to attend Sequim High School. To meet this competition, the building was remodeled in 1921. Modern heating, plumbing, and equipment were installed. A new wing provided a large hall and wide stairs to the second floor where there was room for a large auditorium and four classrooms. The additions did not have the desired results, for Sequim High School was accredited, and Dungeness was not. Accreditation was not based on the quality of the education provided, but on the fact that there were not 16 high school pupils in Dungeness. From 1923 on, there were no more high school classes.
From 1923 to 1940, two teachers taught eight classes, after which 7th and 8th graders were sent to Sequim. In 1955, the Dungeness and Sequim School Districts were consolidated, and the old Dungeness School was closed.
In 1967, seeing its potential as a community center, the Dungeness Community Club purchased the land and the building from the Sequim School District.
Following the refurbishing of the building with many hours of volunteer work, the school was maintained for many years through the efforts of the Community Club and Women of the Dungeness. In 1995, faced with rising maintenance costs, the schoolhouse was donated to the local museum and is now operated as a division of the Museum & Arts Center
The Dungeness School was designated a Washington State Historical Site in 1973. On May 19, 1988, this beautiful old building was listed on the National Register of Historical Places.http://www.dungeness.com/schoolhouse/index.htm

One of Our Views
If you walk down the street just a bit, this is the view we see when we go on our walks. The little
body of water is just called the lagoon. Our neighborhood is called Diamond Point. To the east of the point is Discovery Bay and the west is the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We are located on Miller Peninsula and directly across the small inlet is Quimper Peninsula. On the otherside of that peninsula, is the Victorian town of Port Townsend. The Richard Gere movie, "An Officer and a Gentleman" was filmed there in town and the historic Fort Worden, which also has a haunted graveyard.

Theme Day for the month of October 2007

When you visit a loved one at a cemetery on a regular basis, you start to know the other people who are buried there. Our daughter is buried at Dungeness Cemetery in Sequim. We often visit the grave a little baby also buried there...
Baby Benjamin only lived a few months, born to very young parents. He was obviously very loved.
Not far from Courtney's grave, is the grave of a man named Frank Kilgore. He died in 2001 the day before Courtney's birthday, she had only been gone from us a few months.
Frank's wife Erna was visiting his gravesite when she saw me standing at Courtney's grave, and she walked over to talk to me. Erna was from Germany and had a very thick accent. She asked me if I was the mother of the child buried there and I told I was.
She said that it broke her heart knowing that a girl so young had died. She told me about "her Frank" and their life together.
I hadn't seen Erna since that day. When we went to the cemetery to put flowers on Courtney's grave for her 7th anniversary, I felt pulled over to Frank's grave and it was then I saw that Erna had died too.
"Erna Kilgore
Port Angeles resident Erna Kilgore died Feb. 19, 2007, at the age of 84. She was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Kassell, Germany, to Anna Maria (Wagner) and Albert Gustac Wunsch. She married Frank Kilgore. Mrs. Kilgore lived in the Port Angeles area for 20 years.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews in Germany.
She was preceded in death by husband Frank Kilgore in 2001."
You never know when someone will touch your life, even if it's only once.

Dancing in the Park
One of the great events in Sequim is the free music in the park, which took place each Tuesday all summer long. And once a month after the music, they showed a free movie screened on a large inflatable screen.
It makes for a great evening, to bring lawn chairs and a picnic basket while you listen to music (in this case it was a favorite of ours Deadwood Revival), and watch kids, young and old, dance, tap and clap to the music.
Then watch the movie under the stars, all wrapped up in blankets... that night it was Fly Away Home.
A perfect evening.
The joys of living in a small town.

7 Years
It has become our tradition to visit the cemetery with flowers and two seashells, on her birthday and anniversary date, as well as mother's and father's day, and then stop at the 3 Crabs Restaurant for dinner.
The year after her death, we held a three day memorial as a celebration of her life.
Friends and family came for the weekend and the first night was a dinner at the 3 Crabs.
The management and employees bent over backwards to make sure we were comfortable and happy. It was a wonderful dinner and a great way to remember Courtney with our family and friends. Tim and I wrote a letter and sent it with some pictures to the restaurant and the placed them in their scrapbook which is in the lobby of their building.
Unfortunately, neither Tim nor I were up to going out yesterday. We keep thinking that time will be more healing but it's not. The anniversary of Courtney's death still hits as hard now as it did then. So we will try again on the 20th, which is the anniversary of when she was buried.

In the News
Our local newspaper did an article about Sequim bloggers and including this blog.
But I also have another one:
Sequim Magick
It's more informative with some pictures...
9/11 is Also Tim's Birthday
So, we decided to celebrate by having dinner at Jeremiah's BBQ.
The food was great... the ribs very tender and the potato salad had both black and green olives (our favorites). We also loved that when you opened the door a frog "ribbited". I guessing that's from the song "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog" from the song by Three Dog Night. Is it ironic that our son's middle name is also Jeremiah?
And to stick with the pork theme, I gave Tim the movie DVD of Hog Wild with Tim Allen.

Sequim Irrigation Festival
The Irrigation Festival starts this weekend....
Cindi
Bringing irrigation from the Dungeness River to the brown and parched prairie began as a dream of four pioneer settlers who were visionaries of their time. D.R. Callen had moved to Sequim from an irrigated area in Colorado and he convinced James R. Grant, H. Hucksford and Captain Thomas Jones that "water was wealth." Together they set out to persuade their neighbors to go along with the idea. The skeptics called them "crazy" and said that water could not be made to run uphill; but there were those who believed. On July 20, 1895, a group of about 20 people held the first meeting of the Prairie Ditch. Incorporation papers were signed November 18, 1895, and the hardy pioneers worked all winter long building the ditch and flume.
Money was scarce and the surveyor was paid partly in potatoes. Everyone gave what they could and the women cooked for the workers. Even the children helped by carrying water, running errands and tromping clay into the gravel. Finally, the following spring it was time for the "big day." On May 1, 1896, the residents of the Dungeness Valley and surrounding communities came by wagon, on horseback and on foot to witness the opening of the headgate for the first time. Edgar B. Wicklander in "The Grants of Sequim Prairie," gives a detailed account of that first celebration: (synopsis)
"The day dawned fair and warm for May. The Grants arrived at the picnic grounds while the dew was still on the grass. Other families arrived about the same time, driving their wagons from the nearby Sequim prairie settlement. Those from some close farms walked the dry roads. Later in the morning groups arrived from Port Angeles.
"The Bicycle Club of Port Townsend chartered a tug boat for the trip to Port Williams. They docked at 11 a.m. and some rode their bicycles to Sequim while others loaded their vehicles into wagons. The shining cycles amazed the young people of Sequim, but the dress of the 'city folk' was of interest to everyone. The men dressed in turtle neck sweaters, knickers and caps and the ladies wore 'very daring' short skirts, almost up to their shoe tops. Their outfits were completed with shirtwaists, jackets and perky hats and the Sequim farm kids thought they all looked rather funny. Long wooden tables had been set up and covered with hams, roasts of lamb and pork, salads, breads and chicken cooked every way possible. Each family had brought enough food for themselves and one or two other families, and no one went away hungry.
"At the appointed time a group of men who had built the ditch went up to the upper end to turn the waters of the river into the new flume. As usual things did not go according to plan. When the headgate was raised the water refused to turn. Undaunted, the men located a wagon load of clay and picked up a wagon full of kids. They dumped the clay at the head of the flume in the gravel and told the kids to jump in. The kids got in to the river's edge in their bare feet and tromped the clay into the gravel until the water flowed over it into the flume. It wound its way, the muddy water slowly following the flume, then into the dusty prepared big ditch, and finally all the way to the furrow, right into the picnic area. The skeptics who had said that water couldn't run uphill were at last convinced."

Alone
I took this picture early one morning right after the sun came up. The fog was rolling on and gave the whole scene a kind of eerie feeling. So I called the picture "Alone". The pilings are from an old pier that once was a part of the Diamond Point Quarantine Station for immigrants entering Washington state. My great-grandfather, Fred Dean, was an immigration official who worked at this office. Most of the station buildings are gone now, but the doctor's office still stands and now it's a large expensive house just down the street from our house.
